During remarks to law enforcement officers in New York on July 28, President Trump said police should not be “too nice” to suspected gang and criminal cartel members being taken into custody.⠀

At the event in Suffolk County, Long Island, Trump spoke about his administration’s ongoing efforts to rid the U.S. of illegal immigrants and particularly members of MS-13, the gang that police say is responsible for 17 killings on Long Island since early 2016.⠀

Some in the crowd cheered at Trump’s remarks. But on social media, some observers were quick to accuse the President of encouraging violent behavior among officers at a time when police departments nationwide are under pressure to clamp down on officer-involved incidents.⠀
